A man chains his 14-year old daughter to the front of their house by a chain around her neck. The lawyer having to defend him doesn't want to. She thinks he should rot in jail. She goes to meet him. If you want to know what happens next, go read the story!
That is the strong point of the story - you want to know what is going on and what happens next.
There are some transition points in the story that could be made to work better, I think (Stu has changed one already in the re-worked version) but I wonder, even in this version, and whatever the personal background, if a trained public defender, mature in life experience, should have her professional credibility suborned by the author with that complete loss of control. Given all of that, the transition from short-fused harpy to understanding womanly comforter of the erstwhile enemy is a bit on the abrupt side.
So there you have it. Fascinating, readable story with a couple of flaws that one can overlook.
