The Jacket
An amusing tale of expert craftsmanship, both on the jacket and on the story. Our tale brings us into the life of Fred Baumgartner, also known down at the horse racetrack as Toutie.
His ex-wife's call breaks into an otherwise normal day with a dual request. One is for the support check that is ten days overdue, and the other is for his attendance at his son, Marvin's, high school graduation. Despite his overflowing wardrobe his ex asks him to get a good jacket, not the clownsuits he usually wears.
Toutie turns to his friends at the track for a referral to a quality tailor. Between jokes on his wardrobe and life he is finally steered to a small tailors shop. Louis LaPierre is a great tailor who says he can make a good jacket for him. When Toutie asks for the best Louis assures him it is beyond his price range at $1000.
When asked about the price Toutie is led on a worldwide journey complete with the tailor's cousins who provide nothing but the best for 'his masterpiece'.
A hilarious slice of , dare I day it, jewish humor. A delightful story which bears reading again to savour the subtle and less subtle strains of humor.
