This is one of those very difficult stories to do a concise review of. "Joy Ride" is fast, confusing, entertaining, frustrating and annoying. The first person narrative is handled well, too well at times but the author swings and darts through distracting tangents every few lines making understanding not only difficult but almost impossible. I have a friend who writes like this and though I am always amazed by the complexity of the word structures I am always let down by my own inability to comprehend the meanings hidden between the lines.
I feel that the author intrudes too much unto "Joy Ride" and the distractions, instead of being clever simply become distractions. I also think there are far too many ideas a float in story making the outcome an anti-climax. The writing here is like a continuos running literary tap. Verse flows freely over the page but it smudges the ideas, the vision, the thread we hope to call story.
"Joy Ride" is a good read for the fast paced journey to the end alone, don't try to understand all its complexities, tangents and mindless meandering try and enjoy it for the free flowing verse it is. Judging by the structure and speed of this piece i might hazard a guess that the Ph.D. is in either computer science, math or physics. The last is a bit to obvious considering the subject matter.
Nice work but too confusing and complex for the average reader.
