I must admit: It took me a few days to sit down and read this story - because I don't, as a rule, like war stories. "Done to death" comes to mind. But once I got past the first awkward paragraph, I was hooked. Was it the band of singing soldiers sent into the field to cheer up wounded comrades that intrigued me (how unlikely), or was it the time of year? Christmas. ( I should mention there are few Christmas stories that do it for me either.)
I guess it was both, as well as the authors solid characters that impressed me. The story portrays the futility, resentment, gore, harshness and reality of war. Not to mention the haunting darkness that hangs over the dead, the nearly dead, and the soon to be dead.
The author does a good job with this piece, even though the ending was far more predictable than the rest of the story. For that reason, I won't spoil it for anyone reading this review before testing the actual story, and I urge them to take a few minutes to be entertained.
