Living under June
Angela is a young woman who has moved fifty miles to a small town after being thrown out by a cruel mother. She has a job but very little money. Her workmate June finds her a place to live. It is small, filthy and miserable, but Angela takes it. June has a son about Angela's age and they get together. She has escaped, or has she? Read the story and find out.
This is a very neatly constructed story that for me has a 'Twilight Zone' feel to it. 'Plus la change; plus la meme chose' almost. The central character finds her new life difficult, but she works hard to scrub away the past. The writer leaves us to imagine what Angela is like, and gives us lots of circumstantial evidence to imagine by. The journey from beginning to conclusion is well-paced, and carries a mood of anticipation as the story unfolds. I found the other half dozen people besides Angela in the story lacking any substance, though. They seemed to be just sketched in. They just did not come alive for me.
Good story to read, though.
P.S. Larry, I love the way Americans refer to the toilet as 'the bathroom'. I wonder if there is some similar Australianism that amuses you. There must be something.
