Looie Stitches and the Race Ace

Looie Stitches & The Race Ace is a story of a reformed gambler (well almost), drawn back into the world of the track, and the sniff of the big win.

Lewis Lapierre (Looie) is the central character of this story, his world and appearance are well drawn through attention to detail when drawing a word picture of his surroundings. Race Ace is also beautifully brought to life through careful use of descriptive phrases. We watch as Looie travels the gamut of emotional states from hope, anticipation, and excitement to despair.

I found the choice of language for dialogue to be unnatural, at times almost as if Gerald just had to insert that great one liner. Some repetition of points already made was unnecessary. I think Gerald needs to give his audience more credit, and to allow the profile he draws for the character make the characters actions acceptable and believable to the reader.

I think you will enjoy this story more if you have experienced the atmosphere of the racing scene, or if you have fought (and lost) with your conscience on the point of an impulse to place a bet.
