Lucky Number is the story of a man who gives up gambling, for the sake of his wife. After a time, he finds it necessary, due to unfortunate circumstances, to return to a casino and try to pick a lucky number at roulette.
The author creates an authentic feeling of desperation, through the descriptions of the anticipatory atmosphere of the casino and the actions of the main character. The reader is dropped, from the very first paragraph, into the anxious adrenaline world of the gambler. This immersion makes the reader continue through the passages of exposition that follow. I think that perhaps some of this could be cut, as the strong point is definitely the action. Not that it is unneccessary information, just that it changes the tone of the story to have so much background for such a short story. I read another story by the same author, Leap of Faith, and the explanations in that story are more closely tied to the action.
However, the writing is water-tight and the ending is a nice touch, I enjoyed the irony but I won't discuss it any further here, because it should be experienced first hand.
