This is a neat tale - one of a scurrilous character, and some sweet revenge. It truly took me by surprise, and I like that. While I was reading it I was thinking that there is something not quite right with Mick (not our beloved SSC Mick, but the Mick in the story. But, then again.....). I went back to reread the story once I discovered the mystery of Mick's character, to see if the character held true throughout. The only section I thought that was a bit askew was the part when Mick was considering the intelligence of the government agency that had placed him the care of Esther and her boar of a husband ten years earlier. Could Mick really be that intellectual? (bear in mind we are talking about the Mick in the story.)
Something to be wary of in all third person narrative: don't give the narrator the same voice as the character. Some of the turns of phrase in this story were good, but sounded more like something Mick would have said, and should not be part of the narrative.
Nice work, Dora.
