Off Course

Off Course is a moment frozen in time. It is a chance meeting at a dinner party. An ordinary tale made extraordinary by some very snappy writing.

The success of this story is in the very disciplined hand of the author. There are no moments of sensational writing to be found here, only the honest fragment of a life going by. The ordinary moments surround a dinner table with chance meetings with exotic people who are at the same time plain yet fascinating.

The author was able to convey a strong and subtle relationship between the protagonist and his wife Evelyn. The story centers around the "glamorous vision" on one of the guests arms. The description of this woman was exceptional and was a strong feed into the story.

I also liked the way the author seemed almost to *float* through the narrative with abstract descriptions on the heat of the room. Normally a break in the story telling like this would distract me to the point of frustration, but somehow the author took me *floating* with him.

The only downer with Off Course is that it really doesn't satisfy the palate at the end. I fear the author took us to his dinner party and fed us anti-Semites for entre, yet denied us the main course.

A good read all the same.
