"Out of the Flames" is a brilliantly constructed story of incomprehensible loss brought on by arson. The style is reminiscent of Joyces stream of consciousness that challenges the reader, without being so challenging that one gives up half way through. No, instead, I was drawn in by the poetic prose and the authors delightful gift for description. Not only does Ms. Alexander beautifully convey a great sense of loss and outrage at an act of senseless destruction, but also creates a disturbing image of the destruction of something beautiful and sacred.
Valerie Marie Alexander displays an exceptional gift in this story. She is brilliant with description, subtle and effective with emotional content and technically, I could find no fault here. This is a shining example of great prose and I look forward to reading more of this authors work. Do yourself a favor and read this story when you have a few spare minutes to savor each carefully selected word. This story is a real treat.
