Sacrifice

Interesting tale of faith and disbelief between family members. Jashm and her brother, Myulli, believe in the truth of the vision in the rock that tells of Gallerra's return in the storm when he will then restore fertility to the soil. Gallerra is revered as a great teacher, a divine by the waiters.

According to their uncle, Fiali, Gallerra was nothing more than a rapist of a village girl. Each is challenged in their belief and remains firm.

When a storm comes up Jashm and her brother are sure Gallerra will return. Fiali is just as firm in his belief that it will be just another storm. Robert makes good use of the tension between the disputing parties.

It almost calls to remembrance the fervor of so-called cultists versus the 'common sense' of the non-cultist family members of the 70's and 80's. It is hard to place what culture this story takes place although an uneducated guess would be somewhere in Asia or one of the Pacific island cultures.

Either ways it is a very fascinating tale with an ending that makes you wonder who was right in the end. But the love of the uncle, and love for family despite all, comes through loud and clear.
