The Sentence
I remember the joy I had when I first read "In Search of Dracula" and "Vlad Dracul - Vampire". Both works dealt with the real life inspiration for the fictional Count Dracula.
My joy of vampires extended to the movies from Bela Lugosi down to Christopher Lee and today's current group which includes Eddie Murphy among others.
I will try and be objective about 'The Sentence'. The plot is simple. The Baron Von Howzwitz, for 600 years a fighter of vampires, is brought to trial for killing a vampire, one of the undead.
The courtroom is protected from any vampire problems, tubs of holy water are at hand. Guards carry supersoakers filled with holy water. They are also armed with wooden stakes.
Who's on trial here? Why all the precautions if vampires are okay? Many of the key issues are dealt with in chamber just before the trial begins. Are vampires able to be killed if they're already one of the undead?
The story could be about so many other things in this litigous-crazed world of ours.
Despite so many cross currents Ruth manages to keep the focus of the story on the key issue. Is the Baron guilty of murdering one of the undead? He has suffered the loss of family and friends to this curse even to the point of having to kill them himself.
For an interesting read and a well done story read 'The Sentence". You'll keep a jar of holy water by your bed after you do.
