This work is, simply put, wonderful. The story centers around Bethany Pater, a child abused by her father.

Avis comes to protect Bethany from her father one night and from then on stays with her day and night.

Eventually, something tragic happens and Bethany is sent to the state hospital- her protecter going with her even then though hating Bethany for being so weak and needing protection. A doctor tries to treat her and finds the friend as a stowaway and wants to make a compromise. And Avis, wants no part of it! The description is rich without having to go into horrible details of abuse The differences between Avis and Bethany are shown very well through the description of activities and thoughts of Avis. This is a must read with a surprise ending!
