The writer sets the stage well in the restaurant with the diverse group of people sitting at the tables.
Apparently it is for debutantes and their honored guests with friends and family. One of those functions where you are required to stay despite the company.
The threads of conversation weave several different themes throughout the story. They all deal with prejudice in one way or another.
The lead character confronts such conversation subconsciously but readily apparent to others. His wife reads him like a book and is there when needed to avoid trouble.
The ending is fitting and a satisfying one. A slice of life for those who need it.
