The Waste of the Day is a director's story of attempting to find someone to fill the role of the butler in a play. Sounds like an easy job. But nooooo....
The three auditions that we hear are each in their own way great. The voices of the characters are sure and individual. And the narration is great, not self-conscious at all.
I won't spoil any of it for those checking out the review before they read it. But, I will say, that this is a good example of an author not trying to do more with a story than it deserves. Not trying to be heavy handed and leading. If a reader chooses to derive a moral from this piece, or uncover a subversive meaning -- fill your boots. I just read it for the fun of it, and fun it was. Quill 'em, Mick.
