Warren
It's Warren. You know Warren, he's the guy from the office with saggy pants, turned-in feet, and a limp comb-over. His mother has a key to his apartment, and his father wants to make a golfer out of him. He wants very badly to impress Julie from the mail-room, so when he's assigned to her team for the company scramble, he gets up at 5 AM to play the course before the event.
Warren is written so well, it's easy to feel that you know him. The scene where his parents are grooming him for the golfing is both hilarious and painfully accurate. Their conversation builds beautifully, even though they are talking at cross-purposes. Throughout the story, the short, measured sentences paint the portrait of Warren with sure strokes, and the pacing is a work of art. There isn't a wasted word in this story, and the result is tight and balanced.
Warren's story doesn't have a happy ending. But the weight of detail about his life makes the ending appropriate, in fact it's even foreshadowed in a very neat way. Warren is a geek to the very end, but his story is well worth reading.
