How Has the World Treated You?
Two old lovers reunite.... catch up on their lives after 25 years and then fall into bed. Not an uncommon experience as the subject of books and movies. But somehow it doesn't quite work here.
Despite the well, clearly written text, it lacks the fire of conviction to imagine the two lovers falling into bed after 25 years and Margo showing Jimmy Abbott her battle scars of a mastectomy. Breast cancer, a sensitive subject for any woman, can destroy the most feminine feelings in a woman in many different ways- through the removal of a breast, through the reactions of her lovers and through her own mind. If she was truly searching for a release ( "I could feel something release inside of Margo, like a vast breath escaping from her.") this would be possible with a former lover or a stranger but there is a bit of confusion with the "warm, forgiven kiss that almost made me cry for some reason." The reader is left thinking, "What was the author trying to say here?"
Although this is a descriptive piece, it is a bit low on motive.
