Youthful
Have you ever had the feeling that you were getting old before your time? That everyone around you was young and vital and full of enthusiasm while you were dragging around in a tired daze? The main character in Youthful has.
This is a very nice story. It would be easy to let the subject slip into self-pity mode, but the author keeps a tight rein on it and the result is just a gentle unfolding of the life of a young family.
I had a few moments of recognition, reading this story, but then, when I was 26 I had three children (like the main character) and felt much the same way about the whole situation. There is a good moment when the mother is on the playground with her smallest child and compares herself to the professional mommies hanging out around her.
The only criticism I have is that some of the characters could be explained a little better. I thought, initially, that the main character was a woman, but then there was confusion when he/she was in the shower with Isabella, who could be either a child or a wife, and Duke could (sorry) be a dog, but turned out to be a husband. A few words would clear this up, (my two-year-old, my husband, etc.) because there's really no reason to be mysterious. And the guessing made it hard to concentrate on the story, in places.
Other than that, however, a nice read.
