Motivation - 2037
We go 50 years into the future where an elderly law enforcement official describes an innovative way to have criminals 'do time' with minimal expense to the taxpayer.
This is a fascinating idea, fleshed out with enough pseudotechnology to make the premise believable. It does the right thing as far as SF writing goes - although the story depends on fictional science, the science is not the story.
The tale is written in a breezy, rambling and enjoyable style that is thoroughly appropriate to the subject. Occasional grammatical lapses, and I don't know what the asterisks with the numbers mean.
The story is given a short prologue harking back to 1997 where, I'm afraid, the author does a bit of overt moralising. I think it could be left out altogether to the benefit of the story as a story. What is lacking, I think, is a well-rounded character. This Dennis E. Culpate sounds like he could be a thoroughly unprepossessing, obnoxious central character to offset the 'message'. (Or I might just think this because I don't agree with the message!)
All in all, this is well worth reading. Hats off to Thomas!
