Strange Wind

© Clare Manson

t was a calm and sunny afternoon, the kind of afternoon which makes everything and everybody feel relaxed. Alicia Middlebrook, a year twelve student, lay spread across her floating pool spread. As she lay in the sun, with a cool breeze on her face, she felt a larger wind across her. She shivered. Then, as if by force, she fell with a splash into her pool. Alicia came up, gasping. Once again, she was pushed under. This time, she scrambled out of the pool and ran inside. The next day, when her neighbour came to deliver the eggs, she was gone.

Andrew Wilson groaned as his mother called for him to get up. " I hate school!" he mumbled. But he got up. As he got dressed, he noticed a strange glow coming from his closet. Curious, he pulled the closet open. He was hit with a great gust of wind, bowling him over, making him land on his chair. As he pulled himself up, he noticed something quickly going out the window. Andrew felt cold. He grabbed his jacket, and went downstairs. His mother was waiting impatiently. " Hurry up, you're late already!" He pecked his mother on the cheek, then ran out the door.

"At last, the end of the day!" Andrew ran from the school and headed for home. When he arrived home, he found a note from his mother saying ' Back soon. Dinner's in the oven.' That's strange, he thought, as he pulled out his dinner- sausages, that doesn't look like Mum's writing. He shrugged, and put the sausages in the oven again. After he had done his homework, he came to the kitchen and pulled his dinner out. There was a sudden burst of wind outside. He ran to the window. What he saw stunned him. People were running for their lives, screaming and yelling. He ran to the door and stuck his head outside. " What's going on?" he yelled, trying to be heard against all the yelling. One man stopped. " Run! It's the wind! HELP!" Andrew was confused. "Wind?" Then he saw the most terrifying thing he had ever seen.

A hurricane! He slammed the door shut, then leaned against it, panting. " I sure hope it can't get in houses!" He ran upstairs and bolted all the windows and doors. Trying not to think about his fear of hurricanes, he climbed into bed and fell asleep. Just as he drifted off, he thought, where is Mum?...

When he woke, he found himself trapped in his blankets. As he untangled himself, he thought about his last thought he had had before he went to sleep. He ran downstairs. Surprisingly, his mother was there, making breakfast. "Mum?" he said. " Who else?" she replied cheerfully. Where were you?" he asked. " I think I got carried away by aliens in a hurricane!" she said. Andrew knew she was joking, but her reply made him a little uneasy...
